The “Right” Way to Eat Sushi
Sushi is probably one of the first things that strike us when Japanese cuisine is mentioned. However, it turns out that most people are not eating it the “right” way. Some of the common mistakes that people make when they eat sushi include using chopsticks, putting soy sauce on the rice side of the sushi, and mixing wasabi into their soy sauce.
A true sushi fan should practice proper sushi etiquette, even in Singapore. Here are some tips on how to eat the Japanese dish under our Tora Tora menu range, according to the experts.
Tip #1: Use your hands
It may seem impolite to eat sushi with your hands, but it is actually the best way to eat it. Not only does it prevents the sushi from breaking up, it also provide better control and grip when dipping the sauce.
Tip #2: Dip the side with the fish
When eating sushi, soy sauce is essential. To maintain the original and authentic flavours of the dish, always dip in soy sauce the side with fish, not the side with rice. The role of the soy sauce is to enhance the flavours of the sushi; hence, just a touch of it is enough. Sushi should also be eaten in one bite. Cutting it in half is considered rude to the chef who made it.
Tip #3: Don’t mix wasabi with soy sauce
People often mix wasabi into their soy sauce. However, purists believe pouring wasabi into the soy sauce will dilute the flavour of the wasabi. It is advised to spread a small amount of wasabi on the top of the fish after dipping the fish side of the sushi.
Tip #4: Look for Authentic Japanese Restaurant
If you are looking for high quality Japanese sushi, Yamato Izakaya is the place to be at. Located at Tai Seng MRT, this Japanese restaurant serves not only sushi, but also traditional unagi dishes ramen, donburi, shashimi, udon, gozen and nabe.
With all that being said, there is really no right or wrong way to eat something. As long as you are enjoying yourself, appreciating your food and its creator, then you are probably doing it right.
